WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – COVID-19 vaccines through the Washtenaw County Health Department are now available for children aged 6 months through 4 years old.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were authorized and recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Drug Administration on June 17. County health department clinics are currently open by appointment only by scheduling online here or by calling 734-544-6700.
County health officials require parents to be present at appointments and encourage them to speak with their child’s pediatrician for any vaccine questions. Michigan Medicine is also hosting a livestream Thursday, June 23, to answer questions on vaccines for children age 5 and younger.
The livestream starts at 1 pm and will be available on Facebook Live at both the CS Mott Children’s Hospital and Michigan Medicine pages. It will also stream on the Michigan Medicine YouTube channel.
The livestream forum will feature Dr. Debra Langlois, a Mott pediatrician, Dr. Sandro Cinti, an infectious diseases specialist, and Dr. Pam Rockwell, a family medicine physician. They will answer questions ranging from the vaccine and its potential side effects to the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic and current variants’ effects on children.
“The younger age group has been especially vulnerable during the pandemic,” Langlois said in a statement. “They’ve been without vaccine protection while many communities have dropped safety measures like mask wearing. We understand that parents considering whether to vaccinate younger children may have many questions about the newly available vaccines, and we’re hoping we can help them make an informed decision.”
The county health department recommends all eligible individuals receive full vaccination against COVID-19, adding that vaccine side effects for young children were mild and comparable to adults and older children. The FDA report is available here for review.
A video of the livestream will be posted afterwards.
Outside of the Washtenaw County Health Department, here is a list of providers across the county offering COVID-19 vaccines. For more information on appointments, visit vaccines.gov.
